it’s not regret
just an unexpected accounting of debts
only now called
no, it’s not regret
just remembrance is all
of how close we had come
the war almost won
but I sent up our flag and moved on

Sometimes when it’s the end of summer, and you’re really tired, you think things like: why did this happen? why couldn’t it have happened some other way? will this ever heal? and then you realize that it’s all silly and pour yourself another glass of water.
